Fellow 2026-2027 Sam Haddow
Sam Haddow is a Senior Lecturer in modern and contemporary drama and literature at the University of St Andrews. He received his doctorate from the University of Nottingham in 2013 and taught at De Montfort University, the University of Lincoln, and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama before being appointed to a lectureship at St Andrews in 2015.
His work explores cultural expressions of extreme phenomena such as emergency, grief, and apocalypse, with a particular focus on how readers and spectators make meaning with and from these expressions in times of crisis. His two monographs - Precarious Spectatorship: Theatre and Image in an Age of Emergencies (Manchester University Press, 2019) and We All Die at the End: Storytelling in the Climate Apocalypse (2025) - pursue these questions across a range of disciplines including literature, theatre, live art, children's fiction, video games, and journalism.
Sam's current projects include two edited collections - one on the end of the world in British literature and culture, and the other on the sci-fi author John Wyndham - a collaborative performance project with the KlangHaus Arts Collective on trees and the climate crisis, and a monograph on children in ecological-apocalypse fiction.
