Fellow 2025-2026  Jan Cornelius Schmidt

Jan Cornelius Schmidt is a physicist (Ph.D.) and philosopher (Habilitation). Since 2008, he has been Professor of Philosophy of Science and Technology at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences / European University of Technology. Previously, he was a junior researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Physics, Mainz, as well as at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Technology, Darmstadt, and Associate Professor of Philosophy of Technology at Georgia Tech, Atlanta.

He has been invited as Guest and Stand-In Professor at universities in Jena, Klagenfurt, and Vienna (BOKU). He achieved positions on the lists at BTU Cottbus (1st place) and Goethe University Frankfurt (2nd place). Schmidt serves on the scientific advisory board of the Transdisciplinarity Net, Swiss Academies of Sciences, Berne, and he is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Journal for Technology Assessment in Theory and Practice. He was a research fellow at the European Academy for Technology Assessment, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, and at an Institute of Advanced Studies at RWTH Aachen.

His research interests encompass the philosophy and history of science and technology, political philosophy, science and technology studies, technology assessment, science, engineering and sustainability ethics, concepts of inter- and transdisciplinarity, and complex systems, nonlinear dynamics, chaos, and self-organization theories.
